There is a new challenger in the social media space, today Nintendo made it known that their first ever app Miitomo will launch in North America in March for both iOS and Android devices. Nintendo outlined their steps with the announcement so lets jump to that and see what we are all in for.

Set your calendars folks because starting on February 17 users will be able to pre-register for Miitomo. They will be signing up for the new Nintendo Account service by one of three ways: their existing email, social media accounts or current Nintendo Network IDs. By pre-registering you will be among the first to find out when Miitomo will be available when in launches in March. Fans who pre-register will also receive a special Miitomo bonus, however there is no indication on what this bonus is -I’m going to go out on a limb here and say something Pokemon related.

So who will Miitomo work you ask? Well the first three letters are mii so you can pretty much guess where we are going with this. As Nintendo puts it “Miitomo is a social experience that uses Nintendo’s Mii characters…to engage friends in a lighthearted and welcoming environment. Users can spark fun conversations and learn more about each other by answering questions such as “What song has been stuck in your head lately?”, “Do you believe in aliens?”, or even “If you saw a nose hair sticking out of your friend’s nose, what would you do?” Users can also easily take and share photos featuring their Mii with the Miifoto feature. Nintendo’s new My Nintendo rewards program will launch alongside Miitomo in March, and will be able to connect with the app.

Miitomo is a uniquely entertaining mobile experience that only Nintendo can deliver…Featuring Mii characters, users will be able to interact with their friends in an entirely new way that transforms communication into a form of play.
– Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing

I am interested to see where this move will take Nintendo. Personally, I will not be participating in this venture but is cool that Nintendo wants to bring its user together in an environment created by Nintendo for Nintendo fans. This will also not be the first and last app Nintendo will develop. Nintendo plans on releasing about five apps by the end of March 2017. Hopefully, their success will snowball and we will see some cool apps in the future.
